Partners, John McMullen and Daniel J. O’Brien established PLANbyDESIGN to provide comprehensive consulting services in Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture. The company is licensed by the Canadian Institute of Planning and the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects and regularly collaborates with architects, engineers, and ecologists on a variety of interdisciplinary projects.

John McMullen, OALA, CSLA, MCIP, RPP

John McMullen, Partner at PLANbyDESIGN, provides planning and design expertise on a wide variety of assignments focusing on community improvement in the areas of urban design, site planning, parks and trails development, and community facilitation. John has considerable professional experience, working in both Canada and the USA, including five years in Jackson Hole, Wyoming as a consulting landscape architect and planner, working on resort and pedestrian oriented development. At PLANbyDESIGN he continues to work closely with community groups and Council on special studies developing sustainable planning and design solutions. From site planning, streetscaping and urban forestry policy, to wayfinding, multi-use trails, bikeways and downtown improvement plans, John has been engaged in land planning and design for over 18 years and remains focused on creating livable communities by designing and building safe, comfortable and attractive streets and public spaces, and preserving and enhancing healthy natural environments.
 

Daniel J. O’Brien, OALA, CSLA

Daniel J. O’Brien, Partner at PLANbyDESIGN has been responsible for the design of some of the most iconic landscapes in Ontario. These landscapes range from well-known public waterfronts to exclusive estate residential gardens and can be found in the most southerly reaches of Ontario and north into Muskoka and the surrounding area. Daniel J. O’Brien has a career spanning over 30 years involving experience in the nursery and landscape design/build industry, municipal park planning and administration and is committed to providing quality service in a broad range of landscape architectural consulting assignments. Mr. O’Brien has been commissioned by numerous communities to design and construct parks, waterfronts and other important public spaces and he was the recipient of two design awards presented by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, winning both ‘National Honors’, which is the highest recognition a landscape architecture project can receive in Canada, and ‘Regional Honors’ for the Otonabee River Trail project in the City of Peterborough.
